OMG! I can’t believe this but I have just found out I have been shortlisted as a finalist for The 1st Irish Beauty Industry Awards 2017 ! I didn’t realise it but its based on the high number of nominations received -what I can I say … thanks so much guys!!!!
I’m actually shocked but also so thrilled – I absolutely love my job as a makeup artist. I’ve always loved makeup, colour, design …. anything creative really and although I feel I did come into this industry a little later than I’d have liked I know it was the best decision I have ever made.
When I decided that it was time to follow my dream I knew I needed to train with the best… that was back in 2006/07. So, after completing my Diploma in Fashion and Photography makeup I did a LOT of research before I decided what my next step would be. I decided that Zoë Clark’s makeup school was the one for me. It was the best career decision I made – the school was small and intimate, the girls were all lovely (more about that later!) and Zoë was kind, thoughtful, experienced and so generous with her skills and teaching time. I spent a few years training, assisting Zoë when possible before I felt ‘ready’ to join the make up artist world. I got this lovely message from Zoë when I announce this nomination!
One of the challenges I felt was the biggest at the time was my location – I lived (and still do) in the midlands of Ireland .. surrounded by countryside, bog, nature – a far cry from where I felt I needed to be to ‘excel’ in the makeup industry! However, thankfully common sense intervened (before I packed up and moved to the big smoke!) and I decided I could live, work and build my career from rural Ireland.
I have concentrated on building my business over the past ten years…. I have worked on makeup for film and TV, fashion shows and other fashion events, shoots all over the country and built a name for myself in the wedding industry. I am committed (addicted!) to up skilling – each year I take part in as many workshops and masterclasses I can. I’ve taken part in training programmes with some of the best in the industry including the great Val Garland!
I mentioned the girls I met during my training days – four of us have now become great friends, work colleagues and support each other through the ‘ups and downs’ of self employment…. it’s not always an easy road! We have however built our names and are increasingly in higher demand for bridal makeup. This year to compliment our own businesses and to have a mechanism where we can recommend the best makeup artists to our brides we came together and launched The Bridal Makeup Artistry. This is a very exciting time for all of us and we are looking forward to developing this more in 2018!
Back to the awards this prestigious and glamorous award ceremony will be held on the 3rd of December at Crowne Plaza Dublin Airport Hotel. Can’t wait – don’t get too many opportunities to get glammed up!
